Rules Discussion: RB Scoring January 1, 2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! I hope you all have a wonderful, healthy and happy 2009 !!!
The Fugawi Frogz have proposed the following Rule:
Running backs should get 2 points for every 5th carry.
The reason for the proposed rule is to find balance between the RB and WR positions. Since the inception of PPR last season, WRs have seen their value increase across the board. A WR who has 10 catches for 100 yards gets 20 NERFL points while a RB who has 25 carries for 100 yards gets 10 NERFL points. Under this proposed rule, that same RB will get the same 20 points as the WR.
Since most top tier WR average between 7 and 10 catches per game and top tier running backs average between 20 and 25 carries per game, this rule rewards RBs for their productivity during a game in the same manner that the PPR rewards WRs who garner more catches.
the simple fix to doug’s illustration is to reduce the points per catch to 1point for every two catches with half points given for odd number of catches. a proposal was given to the commish and i’m sure he will post that proposal shortly and then we can have both sides of the issue debated
to reward a running back for the number of times he carries isn’t relevent. if a running back can’t gain yards with each carry he shouldn’t be rewarded for just carrying the ball.
i think a readjustment of the ppr will do what doug wants very nicely
It’s really, really rare to have 10 catches in a game. Otherwise, we’d have lots of receivers with over 100 receptions and the best receivers will get close to 160 a year. No one is near that. (Andrew Johnson, who had 115 receptions, led the league, averages just over 7 receptions a game).
A 10 reception game by a WR is a huge impact game. In the example, 10yds per reception, which means they were responsible for 10 first downs.
I’m also curious if RB production isn’t just down in general. So many platoon situations. Stud yardage WR taken out in passing downs, for example, which robs them of easy receptions.
Anyway, not saying I’d be opposed to this rule change, but there’s nothing that says a WR and RB have to be “equal”, especially these days with platoon RBs and the like.
Pops,
Question: You said, “to reward a running back for the number of times he carries isn’t relevent. if a running back can’t gain yards with each carry he shouldn’t be rewarded for just carrying the ball.” Do you know how many times I see a catch for negative yards or for minimal yardage? Why should we reward WRs for that?
I am sure your proposal will be posted but two things to remember, #1) we don’t do decimal points in NERFL. So it’s 1 pt every two catches or some other plan but we don’t do decimal points in the scoring. (#2) WRs get crappy yards and yet get decent points. I have seen a lot of five or six catch game for sub 40 yards and the WR gets 8 or 9 points for it whil a RB runs 15, 20, 25 times for 90 yards and they get the same 9 pts. Who worked harder? The RB.
This plan balances the disparity of positions. Either find a fix (in whole numbers, not decimals) or eliminate PPR altogether.
And Sujal, I think position-wise, we should make (in theory) positions equal so that (a) trades can be made and (b) it gives equal value to all positions so that “on any given sunday” all things are equal.
And finally, as Josh and I have always said, more scoring is good.
so doug change the wide receiver rule to incorporate a rule change for negative yards on a catch.
and its not about who works harder its about equity in scoring. if a team runs 60% of the time there should not be a benefit to the owner for carries over the team that throws the ball 60% of the time since the passing team has to complete the pass. the runner just takes the rock and runs
Pardon me for my error in typing, I meant “Who was more productive?”
I wish it were that simple. Unfortunately, the check boxes are per 1, 5, or 10 catches. I can’t even set it up to be 1 point for every two catches.
