Dear NERFL Owners,

I have had numerous conversations with people over the past four days. I have also read all of your comments and ideas about the NERFL Draft. Thank you all for your honest input. The twelve owners of NERFL make this league the best fantasy football league in the country.

After my conversations, emails, and reading the comments on the NERFL Blog, I have come to the conclusion that we still have a lot of work to do to address future NERFL Drafts. It would be next to impossible to accomplish this work in less than twelve days and be ready to implement a new draft system by August 29, 2009.

You all have been thoughtful in your approach to addressing the draft and while we may alter or modify the way we conduct the NERFL Draft in 2010 or beyond, it is in the best interest of the membership not to make any changes for the 2009 NERFL Draft. The great part of the discussion we have had over the past four days is that we have a road map for looking at our draft and what may or may not be the best system in the future.

Over the course of the next five months, I will talk with all of you and present some ideas and options based on the numerous conversations I have had. I will ask a committee of three or four owners to review and modify any and all proposals and hopefully by January, we will be able to present a draft system that tweaks some of the obsolete methods we currently utilize and introduce some new and unique methods for future consideration.

The goal is to make NERFL the best league it can be. I value all of your input and I look forward to working with all of you as we move forward toward the 2010 rule book.

As for the 2009 NERFL Draft, nothing will change!

Thank you,
The Commish

Poll: NERFL Draft August 15, 2009

Having spoken to many people and reading the notes of the Straw Poll below, I was wondering how many people would like to run the draft under the following conditions.

1) The first five/six rounds of the draft will be conducted as our current “Snake Draft format.”

2) The sixth/seventh round to the end of the draft will be conducted as a “true auction draft” as described in the straw poll below.

The reason I present a hybrid version of the draft is that a lot of people have expressed interest in the “true auction” draft but a lot of people have also expressed concerns about implementation. They have asked if we can do a half and half draft so that we have an opportunity to try out the “true auction draft” but after the first five or six rounds so that a technicality or problem doesn’t affect players who are critical to building a NERFL team.

The logic is that by trying the “true auction draft” on the back half of the draft, NERFL owners will be able to have an informed dialogue about which auction method works best when we decide the future draft options of NERFL in January. Based on the results of conversations that I have with owners over the next week and the comments in the comment section below, I will make an informed decision about how to proceed at the 2009 NERFL Draft in two weeks.

Please feel free to contact me via email or telephone if you have questions. And as always, your input into this conversation below is the conversation below is always accepted because by having an honest discussion, we can develop the best process for NERFL in the future.

Have a great week,
The Commish

This is a nonbinding discussion (for now). Which means that regardless of your opinion (unless there is overwhelming consensus one way or another), nothing will change in the way we conduct our business at the NERFL Draft. This conversation is gauge an idea that was presented by someone who isn’t in our league.

With that said; I was asked the following question:

“Would your league ever conduct a true auction draft instead of a snake auction draft?”

“What is the difference?” Good question.

SNAKE AUCTION DRAFT – Currently, we employ this method. It means we have a draft order. One Owner puts up a player and we follow the progression of owners in a snake draft methodology, one at a time, until only one owner remains. That owner gets the NFL Player. Once an owner declines to bid, they are eliminated from bidding again. But it methodically goes around the room, in order, one owner at a time.

TRUE AUCTION DRAFT – We have a draft order. This is used to determine who puts a player up for bid. Once a player is placed on the auction block, all owners can bid at any time until a highest bidder gets the player following a “going Once, twice, three times, sold.” type progression. There is no set progression (one by one) to follow, an owner can bid at any time and is never eliminated until the word “sold” is said by the auctioneer and the highest bidder gets the player.

Thoughts?
